Mediterranea 18 Young Artists Biennale

Pre-Biennale a Bari, Mercoledì 3 maggio 2017

Katër i Radës is not just an opera of remembrance. Quite the contrary, it is an effort to set free, with the help of music, the human universe of those who experienced one of the many tragedies of the Mediterranean: that of the shipwreck off the Italian coast of the motorboat Katër i Radës overloaded with men, women and children in March 1997. In the single act the Drowned and the Saved, the Survivors and the Dead crowd together amid their voices and thoughts in a journey to darkness full of anxieties and small wishes, dreams and fears, digressions, apparitions and sudden recollections.

Mediterranea 18 Young Artists Biennale

Pre-Biennale in Bari, May 3, 2017

The Biennal of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean “Mediterranea 18”, that will take place for the first time ever in Albania at two venues, Tirana and Durres, will open its doors in Italy with a preview, a kind of pre-Biennal, on next May 3. Bari and the entire Regione Puglia will indeed play host to the artists who, after listening to the welcome addresses delivered by the President of Regione Puglia, Michele Emiliano, the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Albania, Mirela Kumbaro Furxhi, and the President of BJCEM, Dora Bei, will see the performance “Katër i Radës. Il Naufragio” produced by La Biennale Musica di Venezia and Cantieri Teatrali Koreja, with music of Admir Shkurtaj and libretto by Alessandro Leogrande.

Katër i Radës. Il Naufragio” reminds us of the deeply sound bonds that unite the peoples of Puglia and Albania, and that these same bonds are extremely important for Europe and the Mediterranean today: exactly 20 years ago, on March 28 1997, the motorboat Katër i Radës brimming with refugees fleeing uprisings in Albania capsized after a collision in the Strait of Otranto in what was to become the deadliest shipwreck of this stretch of sea. Taking inspiration from this event of the history of our two countries, and far from pursuing merely commemorative purposes, the Regione Puglia has wanted so keenly to contribute to this edition of the Biennal organized by the Albanian Government in a view to paving the way to new, creative and lasting collaborative relationships by allowing us to take the sea together on a real and symbolic journey as individuals and as a one only collective.

The Bari Biennial preview will in fact unfold along a metaphorical path: 120 artists will be travelling onboard a ferry from Bari to Durres. During the journey a night performance/talk will take place on the same topic of the Biennale: HISTORY + CONFLICT + DREAM + FAILURE = HOME.

Hosted by italian journalist and art critic Manuela Gandini, and with the participation of Driant Zeneli, artist and artistic director of Mediterranea 18, this nighttime discussion, unique in its kind, will “revolve” around Michelangelo Pistoletto and Juan Sandoval artwork “Mar Mediterraneo – Sedie Love Difference”, made up of sixty chairs that together draw the shape of the Mediterranean and on which special attendees will sit, including Cathryn Drake, Ettore Favini, Adrian Paci, Gilad Ratman, Said Murad, Alicia Knock, Gabi Scardi, Costas Varotsos, Alessandra Galletta, Roland Sejko, Stefano Rabolli Pansera, Daniele Capra, Anna Daneri and many other guests, together with the young artists of Mediterranea 18.

Puglia school students have been invited to participate in this event. After a selection through an on-line call for proposals on the theme of Mediterranea 18: Home/Casa, the winners will be given the exceptional opportunity to get onboard and attend the “Mediterranea 18“ Opening Ceremony in Albania, at Parku Rinia (The Youth Park) in Tirana.

“The choice of starting from Bari to reach Albania takes on the meaning of a return. Crossing the Strait of Otranto exactly twenty years after the Kater I Rades sank to the bottom is like trying to collect our thoughts, to give them time to try to understand, to reconcile ourselves with history and with the tragic days we are living through today. It is a strong gesture. An artistic and political gesture combined. A gesture that is both demanding and moving. A gesture that will leave its mark on the relations between Albania and Apulia. It is with these feelings of close togetherness that we wish all the young artists leaving from Bari a good return home.” Michele Emiliano – President of the Regione Puglia (Apulian Regional Government)
