Alternative Nomadi

Alternative Nomadi is a side project of Mediterranea 16 – Errors Allowed, the sixteenth edition of the Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, held in Ancona from June 6th until August 31st 2013.
The event, developed to deepen some of the ideas at the basis of the Biennial project, was curated by Alessandro Castiglioni and promoted by BJCEM together with the City of Milan. The focus of the event was an exhibition at the Sala delle Colonne, inside the Fabbrica del Vapore compound in Milan and involved a collaboration with the MA*GA Museum of Gallarate and ViaFarini DOCVA.
The exhibition
“Why I become restless after a month in a single place, unbearable after two?”
(L’alternativa Nomade, Adelphi, 2010).
This reflection of Bruce Chatwin is a starting point for a consideration about a peculiar contemporary condition, a new concept on the idea of nomadism: an unsettled fluidity, a constant movement between territories, information, resources and media platforms, which marks out a renovated attractiveness for an inclination to a continuous mobility. The exhibition presents some of the artists who took part to Mediterranea16 – Young Artists Biennial, whose works are a cause for reflection on this specific condition. To pursue this research, three different areas of investigation have been defined: Politics of the image, measuring the political implications of the construction of an image; Identity, analysing the relations between individual identity and social context; Places, on the value of the heritage carried by different places. The artists’ work generate a dialogue among them and in relation whit those three paths, showing us some possible nomadic alternatives to our everyday life.

The side projects
A distinguishing feature of the project is the creation of a network of institutions, promoted by BJCEM to develop the exhibition. The collaboration is based on the organization of two parallel programs: from December 3rd to December 23rd 2013 the MA*GA Museum, newly reopened after a fire on February 2013, presented a Videofocus program, gathering ten videos and movies realized by artists who were invited at the Biennial in Ancona: Etienne De France (FR), Veli&Amos (SI), Igor Bezinović (HR), Hanna Hildebrand-Paul Wiersbinski (IT-DE), Virginia Zanetti (IT), Randa Maddah (SY), Esmir Prlja (BA), Lilo Nein (AT), Bujar Sylejmani (KS), Silvia Giambrone (IT).
ViaFarini DOCVA hosted in its Residency program three artists who took part in Alternative Nomadi. Moreover, from January 9th, on the occasion of Alternative Nomadi finissage, it hosted the solo exhibition The Lost Epigraph Trilogy of Maltese artist Dustin Cauchi, also selected for Mediterranea 16. The exhibition remained open until January 17th 2014.
