Iceberg 2005
Illustration section
Passion through music - Demonology
This year's edition of the Iceberg festival - illustration section has seen high participation of young artists from all over Italy with approximately 90 illustrators, presenting high quality works, carriers of an expressive and innovative sensibility, original and quite more courageous from the majority of the works that are being published by the mainstream publishing industry in our country.
Given this important result, the Office of Show and Young Artists from the sector of Culture and relations with the University of Comune of Bologna has decided to continue investing into this activity in order to stimulate the creativity of young illustrators and initiatives that will enable them also a visibility that would otherwise be very hard to achieve. The workshop 'Passion through music' and the publication of Demonology have been born as a result of the cooperation with Hamelin Cultural Association - with an intent to give to the participants an experience which would be extremely formative but also productive, hoping to establish their names in a way that will ensure them brighter future working experiences.
The workshop, conducted by Gabriella Giandelli, an artist and comics illustrator of international fame, was held from 9-11 March and has seen participation of winners and selectioned ones from the illustration section, a group of illustrators recommended by offices of young Italian and French artists, and some students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna where the workshop with eleven participants has taken place.
Starting from listening of the works of some musical groups (Flim, Pan American, Godspeed Black emperor) that compose soundtracks of imaginary movies, a possibility to recreate the atmosphere through different ways of artistic expressing has been considered. In this case the students have started from illustrating pieces of the same story: as in a concept album each of them has worked on the creation of a collective narration through his/her contribution through images, interpreting a piece of the narration Demonology by Rick Moody, without knowing the whole story, but leaving himself to the suggestions and impressions of a single narrative part. The role of the artist was that one of a 'master': it wasn't about a workshop of technique of drawing and painting, but about a moment of transmission of experience and methodology, a mental opening of the professional and creative horizons of the students.
Demonology will be presented at the Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean which will be held in September 2005 in Naples.
