SKUC is one of the leading organisations for the promotion of non-profit artistic activity in Slovenia. Its beginnings go back to the radical student movement in Ljubljana in 1968 and it was formally established on 13 January 1972. In the late seventies and in the eighties, SKUC was one of the most important supporters and promoters of alternative culture. Today, the main goals of SKUC are to support young and promising artists and to organise spare-time activities for young people.
The SKUC Gallery has become an important fine arts, publishing and documentation centre. Information about current exhibitions and other activities can be obtained at www.galerija.skuc-drustvo.si. SKUC also promotes Slovenian musicians abroad and publishes the ROCK VIBE - where you can find information about what is going on in the music scene in Slovenia and abroad.
Today, sections actively engaged in organising concerts are ROPOT, BUBA, and the club SKUC, which stages small concerts of all kinds of music genres.
INFO SKUC, an information centre for young people, was established in 1998. Together with the Youth Centre and information centres MIC and Fuzine, it constitutes the Ljubljana Network of Information Centres L'MIT, which provides a wide range of information for young people. The main task is to offer information about all areas of interest: spare time, culture in the broadest sense of the word, education, scholarships, employment opportunities, youth tourism, active holidays, health, hobbies, voluntary work, help in distress, youth organisations and societies, etc, and makes young people aware that they have the right to be informed. INFO SKUC also sells tickets for concerts organised by SKUC; holders of the EURO<26 and ISIC cards are entitled to a 10% discount. For more information, please visit www.lmit.org. The SKUC premises located at 21, Stari Trg, Ljubljana, are open to many organisations which, in co-operation with the SKUC Club, organise events such as round tables, seminars, discussions with journalists, dance performances, lectures on various social, art and topical issues, video projections, etc. The SKUC Club actively co-operates with similar youth centres from all over Slovenia, mainly through programme exchange. Each year in June, the SKUC Club organises a festival called Live Literature, a literature and music event held in front of the SKUC at 21, Stari Trg. The festival presents local and foreign writers, poets and musicians. Puppet and visual art workshops and performances are held each year in November and December and they welcome children to unleash their imagination through making puppets, drawing, painting and other activities.
