The GENERAL SECRETARIAT FOR YOUTH is an autonomous Governmental Body, established back in 1983, under the auspices of the Ministry of National Education, of Hellenic Republic.
It operates as a reference point for the development of policies concerning young people, and as a Public Service Institution, with a staff of competent officials, aiming at the planning, co-ordination and implementation of a unified policy on youth affairs.
Within the framework of its mission, the General Secretariat for Youth:
- Supports the work of the various Governmental Bodies, in the exercise of their competencies,
- Supports all kinds of initiatives by and for young people,
- Operates as a dialogue link with NGOs and other Agencies involved with young people and,
- Plans and implements all suitable special policies, which aim at:
- The improvement of children's and young people's position in society,
- The encouragement of programmes and initiatives, both in the public and private sector of youth and,
- The safeguarding of the best possible conditions for the full, effective and creative social incorporation and participation of youth in the political, social and cultural life of our country, as well as the ongoing process of the European integration.
Our main priority sectors are:
- Out of School Education
- Youth Employment/Entrepreneurship
- Health Issues
- Youth Information
- Youth Creativity, Artistic Creativity and Culture
- Actions against Social Exclusion
- Leisure time activities / improvement of life quality
- Youth policies in Europe and the World.
Apart from the above, the General Secretariat for Youth has two more important responsibilities:
- It operates as the National Agency for the co-ordination and implementation, at national level, of the E.U. Programme "YOUTH", and
- It is one of the founding members of the International Association of the BJCEM, having hosted, till today, two of the BJCEM's Edition: the 2nd, in Thessaloniki (1986), and the 11th, in Athens (2003).
The General Secretariat for Youth is responsible for the securing of Greek Young Artists' participation in the various Biennials, except those coming from Thessaloniki, for, the Municipality of this city is an autonomous member of the BJCEM
