Malaga (Spain), is a cosmopolitan Mediterranean city with great artistic and cultural scope. Its flagship is Picasso´s figure, represented by The Picasso Foundation - Native Home Museum, and the Picasso Museum. Malaga aspires to be the European cultural capital by the year 2016, with more than 600,000 inhabitants of which more than 35% are young people.
The city's youth policy is canalised largely through the Youth Area (Area de Juventud) of the Malaga City Hall, which currently has a great range of plans and programs for leisure activities, tuition, information and youth consultancies and the promotion of associations, placing special emphasis on its plans and programs to promote young art through the distribution of the works of new artists in Malaga.
The Youth Area is working on the promotion of young artists on a local, regional, national and international basis, with plans such as these:
- Málagacrea, an annual artistic promotion scheme that offers a global and cross-disciplinary vision of the creative moment the city experiences every year, seen through the eyes of its young artists.
- Young Fashion Showcase.
- Young Scenic Arts Showcase (Theater, Contemporary Dance, Circus, Performance.)
- Young Performer's Showcase. Classical music.
- Young Andalusian Music Showcase. MALAGACREAROCK. (New musical tendencies, rock, pop, minimal, jazz, ethnic, fusion, flamenco etc.)
- Young Comic Showcase.
- Young Literature Showcase. (Short story and poetry).
- Young Gastronomy Culture Showcase. (International custom cuisine, Andalusian cuisine and Malaga cuisine.)
- Young Creator's Showcase. Visual Arts (painting, sculpting, engraving, installation, photography, graffiti) and Moving Image (Video, documentary, videoart, cyberart, Web design, animation, short film).
- Young Flamenco Dance Showcase.
Another Program for the Promotion of Young Arte is the PRODUCTION AID, which helps the production and writing of video and short film projects, the production of plays for the theatre, as well as lending professionally equipped rehearsal rooms for music bands. They are as follows: "Young Short", "Young Scene" and "Rehearsal Rooms".
The promotion and diffusion of the artists and their work is brought about through activities such as: expositions, audiovisual projections, scenic representations, fashion shows, concerts, as well as the participation of young artists in National Young Art Gatherings and the International Young Artists Biennial of Europe and Mediterranean.
The selection of the young artists who will take part in the International Young Artists Biennial. Naples 2005. stems from these very cultural showcases and from the Production Aid Program. The jurors, made up of persons with renowned cultural and artistic prestige in the city, as well as established artists, are responsible for deciding the prices for these young artists. Of this previous selection a technical commission of the Youth Area chooses the artists who will go to the Biennial.
For Naples 2005 Malaga introduces a total of 16 artists framed within the disciplines of music, video, viedoart, photography, painting, installation-photography and gastronomy.
